Born in Staufen im Breisgau, Germany, Bastian Wolber attended the Rudolph Steiner Schools until he was 18. However, he wanted to try something different from Steiner and studied German economics and tax law, a path that he would soon discover did not satisfy his desire to create, explore and connect with nature. At that time, Bastian’s younger brother, Christoph, moved to Burgundy to work in the vineyards. While Christoph spent his days perfecting his art at Bernard van Berg, Domaine de la Vougeraie, Domaine Leflaive and Comte Armand, his roommate Alex Götze did the same at Pierre Morey and Domaine de Montille. Inevitably, the two joined forces and in 2016 launched the Wasenhaus winery in Baden.
Bastian was visiting his brother in Burgundy and remembers sharing a bottle of Ganevat with him at La Dilettante in Beaune. “It’s taken my breath away! Its complex and oxidative flavors were something I had never tasted before, “he explains, citing how different the wine was from the conventionally produced wines to which he was accustomed. ” He was alive, had a soul, made me want to know more”.
Shortly after, Bastian followed in his brother’s footsteps and started working on the harvest in Burgundy. He made his bones from Leflaive in 2013 and, from the beginning, had the vision of producing one day his own wine… In 2019 the cacerolos will close from Ganevat. Bastian returns to Burgundy to complete his studies in enology at the University of Burgundy in Dijon, where he has the good fortune to learn techniques and secrets from one of the greatest ever: Jean Yves Bizot, with whom he still works today.
